FAQs What is Counselling? Counselling aims to help you explore and clarify issues that matter to you. It helps you develop resources and coping strategies to deal with difficulties.
Counselling is not only about problems. It also offers opportunities to get to know yourself better and to identify your strengths and work on your limitations in order to develop holistically.
What sort of problems is addressed in Counselling? You can tell the counsellor about anything that's bothering you, however large or small you think the problem is, and whether it is related to your studies or your personal life. There are many things one cannot discuss with family or friends. Your counsellor won't be judgmental, or shocked by what you tell them. Remember if there's anything bothering you, we don't think its trivial at all. It is okay if your concern is about something that happened years ago or if your major concern is your life now. The transition to College from school can be stressful. Many students feel lonely and homesick. You may feel worried, depressed, confused or anxious, because of work or exams, difficulties at home, a broken relationship, money problems ... or for no obvious reason at all.
How long does a session last? Typically counselling sessions last 30 minutes to 45 minutes, but sometimes shorter or longer sessions are arranged. For some people a single consultation is all that they require to sort the trouble. If you do want further individual counselling, additional sessions can be arranged according to what you and your counsellor feel is most appropriate. Any decisions about further counselling or support are made jointly between you and the counsellor. Some Questions and concerns we often come across:
