My expertise is in the area of Traffic and Transportation Engineering with an emphasis in Road Traffic Safety, Data Analytics in Traffic and Transportation, and Sustainable Transportation Planning and Design.
Road traffic crash is a major public health issue worldwide and I am determined to make a difference in Road Safety through a scientific approach. My research over the last 15 years has focused on identification and quantification of risk factors for various transportation facilities in the developed and developing world. In doing that I have focused on identifying risk involved in individual driving and road use, as well as risk imposed by external elements such as infrastructure design, built environment, landuse, weather and traffic operational conditions.
While I have published many original and fundamental research studies in the field of Road Safety, my ultimate objective is to take my knowledge beyond academia and apply them to practice through a systematic approach. Thus my research group has taken up studies of many road development projects in India, in addition to presenting and publishing research findings in internationally reputed conferences and journals. As an educator I am keen in capacity building in the area of road traffic safety as I have observed that the concepts of safety are often not practised during planning, design, construction and operation of transportation facilities. I am thus serving as a standing committee member of “Highway Safety Workforce Development Committee” of Transportation Research Board. I am also active member of Indian Roads Congress Committees H1: Transportation Planning and Design and H7: Road Safety and Design.
