Research activities in our group are in the broad area of monitoring and diagnostics of HV power apparatus. The main focus is the establishment of new methods to extract the information embedded in the frequency- and time- domain response of transformer winding and utilize them to suggest new and interesting applications. Major applications which we have recently addressed are indirect measurement of series capacitance, enhancing physical resolution of transformer model and fault diagnostics in transformer winding using tank current measurement. Online measurement of frequency response and its implementation to identify the damaged/deformed winding in a 3-Ph transformer are the two major challenges in practice to establish the method as well as to harness its true potential. Our present research focus is towards achieving that goal.
Another focus of our research work is to analyze the frequency domain spectroscopy (and/or time domain) of oil-paper insulation in power transformer for health diagnostics of insulation. Important objective of this work is to characterize the measured response and construct an equivalent model in an unique way to quantify the moisture content. Insulation is the heart of any power apparatus and since the moisture content is an important measure for insulation healthiness, quantifying the moisture content will definitely do a better assessment of insulation condition. Furthermore, the objective is to improve the model by introducing temperature effect, ageing impact and other conditioning effects. Inclusion of these features would definitely improve the existing standards.
