We run an active, well equipped research group on surface technology. We have a modern Metco 80 kW plasma spray facility and a DPV particle monitor. We also have in house facilities for SEM, XRD, Tribometry, scratch test, ball milling, surface profiling, standard optical and stereo microscopy. For other facilities like TEM, HR-TEM, FIB, micro-CT we use the institute central facilities. So far six PHD and around 20 MTechs have graduated from this laboratory. At present seven PhD candidates are working in this group. Currently we are running a number of sponsored projects. We publish regularly in peer reviewed journals of repute, e.g., Materials and Design, Surface and Coating Technology.
At present we are working on a number of areas of current research interest. For examples, CNT or diamond particulate reinforced coatings, micro and nano finishing of thermally sprayed coatings, laser treatment of coatings, etc. In addition, we have started working on problems of direct industrial relavance like PTA hardfacing of excavator parts with an industrial partner. We are also working on a fundamental coating research area like splat-substrate interaction.
