We discussed the parameters of ranking and the 'Institute of Eminence', how faculty members can take cognizance of these parameters while focussing on each element of these academics and research. We need to review our research citations, whether we are duly cited, publish in high impact SCI journals, decide proactively on filing patents and copyrights for our research output while pushing up the benchmark of the quality of doctoral research. A lot more emphasis needs to be given on product development through frugal innovations as well as cutting-edge technological innovations that are being pursued globally. On the front of academics, we need to explore innovative methods of online teaching to ensure quality learning. We have to challenge the students to help their talents evolve so that they can match the pace and needs of the industry. Communication is an aspect we need to understand and adapt to tell our success stories through institutional social media handles. Departments as a whole need to internalize the concept of IoE and global ranking and make strategized efforts to achieve these goals. Each one of us must understand our responsibility and strive for excellence collectively.
Addressed the Assistant Professors today. While only 35 could join us at the CET studio, 211 of my friends joined the session, online, to discuss the institutional policy and our vision and plan of action in the coming years. It is important that we have clarity regarding our roles in the COVID situation, what is expected from us to meet the goals of the National Education Policy, Atmanirbhar Bharat. The future of IIT Kharagpur's academia has a crucial role to play in the growth and development of the Institute. In the current scenario, teaching is a challenge. While we have moved to the online mode, it has several disadvantages such as low attendance and attention span, lack of peer learning etc. To address these issues, we discussed new possibilities of innovations in online teaching through dialogue with students in the classes and improve interactions. Further for those who miss the classes, lecture notes need to be drafted intelligently. Another aspect we discussed is the positioning of the Institute globally. To reach our goals and sustain them, the Assistant Professors would need to focus on research output through the procurement of sponsored projects, publications in high-impact factor journals, citations, patents. We have three clear criteria - teaching, research and consultancy. We hope to excel in each of these especially in one of them while maintaining high performance in the others. If we have to achieve our rank among the top global universities, we need to strive towards a common goal and a set roadmap.
A day of celebration as an educationist as we welcome the National Education Policy (#NEP2020) announced by Dr.Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank, Hon'ble Minister, Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India. The policy has substantial elements for the higher education sector. The key among them is setting up the National Research Foundation to foster research culture, removal of MPhil, emphasis on interdisciplinary and Humanities education at IITs, democratization of school education following the three-language formula (introduction of Sanskrit and education in regional language)

Director's authored piece on Mint laying down some ideas for technical institutions to collaborate with public and private players, in areas such as MSMEs, agri sector, state governments, and various other bodies to support the economic stimulus which was announced by PMO India and Ministry of Finance, Government of India in May 2020. IIT Kharagpur is already working in several of these areas under various national mission projects and has the capability to offer its expertise and assistance to relevant collaborators from the government, public bodies and industry. It is crucial that we meet the market demand and societal needs. An economic package can only function appropriately when the right resources are pulled together. The responsibility lies with every individual who has the confidence to act without waiting for administrative bodies to formulate plans and launch schemes. Let us put digitization and automation to optimal use and transform the unprecedented difficulties of the current times into pathways leading us further into the 21st century towards Atmanirbhar Bharat.
Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur is India?s highest-ranked institution for nurturing graduate employability, features in the Top 100 QS Graduate Employability Rankings 2016-17. IIT Madras, IIT Bombay, and IIT Delhi are placed in the 101-150 rankings band. Also, University of Delhi and IIT Kanpur are in the 201 plus segment, with in top 300 universities.
Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) Graduate Employability Rankings is a new ranking designed to improve the quality of analyses about the links between university practices and graduate employability. The rankings parameters are based on the following parameters: Employer reputation, Alumni outcomes, Employer partnerships, Employer-student connections and Graduate employment rates. Stanford University and Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) rank first and second, while China?s Tsinghua University grabs third place. Universities with a strong STEM focus, particularly those emphasising technology, rank highly.
This is the second consecutive year when IIT Kharagpur is ranked top in this category in India.
