The Counselling Centre at IIT Kharagpur started functioning under the aegis of the Dean of Students' Affairs from September 2009 with the aim of improving the mental health and overall well-being of the IITians during their tenure in the institute. A stand alone building (across the Technology Students' Gymkhana) houses this facility and students have welcomed it warmly. The Centre began with a Faculty Coordinator and a full-time psychologist, and currently has two full-time psychologist and a visiting consultant psychiatrist.
The activities of the Centre may be summarised as follows:
- Building a students' network team by training student coordinators for suicide prevention
- One-to-one student counselling low self esteem, time management, anger management, study skills, exam phobia and other major mental disorders such as schizophrenia, depression, bipolar disorder etc.
- Orientation of students to the importance of improving quality of life for increasing productivity
- Group sessions in halls of residence
- Identifying stressors on campus
The current focus is on orientation programmes, increasing the number of student coordinators and training them, and reviewing all students on medication by consultant psychiatrist of the Counselling Centre
