DIAMOND JUBILEE CELEBRATION PREPARATIONS

The Institute is gearing up for the celebration of 60 years of IIT Kharagpur in 2011. A number of activities are planned for the occasion. A series of lectures by eminent speakers from around the world is being scheduled as a part of the celebration. A conclave of Vice Chancellors of Universalities from numerous foreign and Indian universities is also on the agenda. The Institute is coming up with two unique publications for the occasion as well. A visual walk-through IIT Kharagpur, Spirit of IIT Kharagpur 60 Years Helping Buds to Bloom, by eminent photographer located in the US, Sri Shyamal Roy, alumnus of 1965, is in print. Another historically rich account of IIT is being prepared by Mr. Dharam Vir, alumnus of 1969, Ex-Chief Secretary, Haryana and State Chief Election Commissioner. A light & sound show around the historic old Institute building – Shaheed Bhavan – from where IIT Kharagpur started its journey is being planned as well. Talks are already underway for a special train named Technology Express from Howrah to Hijli to commemorate the visit of dignitaries like Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, etc. who visited IIT Kharagpur on 18th August 1951. The institute also proposed to release a commemorative stamp by the postal and telegraph department of India to mark the occasion. Efforts are also on to declare IIT Kharagpur as UNESCO heritage institute.
