Prof. Soumen Das, Professor at School of Medical Science & Technology, IIT Kharagpur, has been conferred 'Outstanding Reviewer Award 2019 ' by Institute of Physics for the 'Journal of Micromechanics and Microengineering' ' in recognition of his high quality and invaluable service in upholding the quality of the publication.
Prof. Abhijit Mukherjee (Associate Professor, Dept. of Geology & Geophysics and School of Environmental Science & Engineering) has been awarded the 2020 Kharaka Award by the Columbus, Ohio, USA based International Association of Geochemistry (IAGC), bestowed to scientists from developing countries -that have achieved major accomplishments, for his research on hydrology and geochemistry. He has also been cited by Wiley as a researcher whose paper has been recognized as one of the most read in Water Resources Research.
The post-COVID industrial world would wake up to a new dawn towards the involvement of MSMEs in re-energizing the industrial sector. Dr. Arindam Mondal, Assistant Professor at IIT Kharagpur’s School of Bioscience shares insights regarding frequently asked questions about novel coronavirus. Dr. Mondal leads the Molecular Virology Laboratory in the School of Bioscience where they study human RNA virus replication and host pathogen interaction on molecular detail to develop novel strategies for therapeutic or prophylactic measures. Currently, his lab focuses upon influenza viruses as a model that causes mild to severe respiratory illness.

IIT Kharagpur has set up research funding for R&D work related to COVID-19. The researchers would be working on several technologies including design and development of rapid diagnostic kit, real-time PCR machine, body suit for COVID-19 patients, personal protective equipment for healthcare workers and portable shredder integrated with sterilizer, Hazmat Suit with forced purified and cooled air circulation for medical professionals, bootstrapping ambu-bag as automated ventilator, telemedicine for fighting viral pandemic, large scale production of recombinant proteins for vaccine and testing.

The alumni of IIT Kharagpur have come forward to support the needy people in and around the IIT Kharagpur campus, who have been severely affected economically due to COVID-1, for a period of 6 months. The short duration fund is exclusively meant for about 10500 poor workers on-campus and people coming from villages near the campus who are dependent on IIT Kharagpur for livelihood and are now out of job / no work due to lockdown.

The superspecialty hospital of IIT Kharagpur has become #COVID19 quarantine centre for inter-state travellers. The Paschim Medinipur district administration recently accommodated about 300 people, for SARS-CoV-2 testing, at the Dr. B. C. Roy Institute of Medical Science and Research, who were returning from various southern states after medical treatment. The facility shall be used for quarantining further batches of people entering West Bengal.
