Introduction
A profession is a cluster of occupational roles that are valued by the society. Apart from a highly specialized training, society also expects a professional to have a sharp sense of social and moral responsibility. Past experience in different fields has shown that an unrestrained professional practice among an uninformed populace may lead to morally unacceptable behavior. Therefore, there is a growing public demand from both professionals and the public about ethics training in professional-specific issues, norms and practices as a value-addition to their skill set.
Aim of the course
This course is designed to enable the participants :
- To learn from the experts the core issues in important professional domains
- To strengthen the knowledge base with hands on training
- To gain knowledge about new developments
- To hear it from the practitioners
- To gather information about resources and materials in professional ethics
Tentative Content Plan
- Ethics, Applied ethics, and Professional ethics: Nature, scope, theories and principles.
- Business Ethics: Corporate social responsibility (CSR), Workshop session on Teaching CSR,
sustainable employee and customer relations, sustainable relation with competitors and suppliers, sustainable production and green business, Corporate citizenship and Government
- Medical ethics and Bioethics: Nature, Harm principle and Risk-benefit analysis, Beneficence and
Respecting rights, Respecting Autonomy and Informed consent, Social justice, Health and disease: Different models, Public health and obligations, Underlying determinants of health, Drug Trial, Special ethical challenges of Infectious diseases
- Engineering ethics: Responsible engineering, Safety and risk management,
- Media ethics: Media Ethics and Media Economics: Who owns media? Ethics of Journalism: Debates on
Truth, Privacy, Stereotypes, Values; Media and Democracy: Freedom of Speech vs Censorship; The Violence of Silence
- Legal ethics: Ethics and values in legislation, Code of conduct for lawyers
- Teaching ethics / Value education: Value of values, Transformation in values
- Workplace ethics
Course Material
Required course material will be provided.
Certificate
After successful completion of the course, participants will receive a certificate issued by Continuing Education Programme (CEP), IIT Kharagpur.

Distinguished IIT Kharagpur faculty from across the disciplines will be involved.

Eligibility For Participation
Faculty of AICTE approved Engineering Colleges and Universities, research personnel from R&D organizations, faculty and students from other than AICTE approved Engineering Colleges of different academic background including the related fields of humanities and social sciences, are eligible.
Course Fees
| Faculty from AICTE approved Engineering Colleges and Universities with approval from the organization as QIP candidate | - | NO FEES (Other benefits as per AICTE norm). A registration fee of Rs.300 (refundable) is required with application.

Travel, boarding and lodging expenses are to be borne by participants from other than AICTE approved Engineering Colleges. However, upon request well in advance, efforts will be made to book accommodation as per availability.
Course fees are to be paid strictly by bank draft in favor of 'CEP-STC, IIT Kharagpur' payable at Kharagpur.

Location
Situated 116Km away from Kolkata, IIT Kharagpur boasts of being the oldest and the largest IIT. Its green, tranquil campus provides a refreshing contrast to the polluted city life. Kharagpur is an important junction in the South-Eastern Railways, and is connected to all major cities in India. Local and express trains connect it to Howrah Station. The IIT is about 5km from Kharagpur railway station, and is accessible by rickshaws, autos, and taxis from the station. The beach town of Digha on the Bay of Bengal is 120 Km from Kharagpur. |
