Makarand M. Ghangrekar, Professor, Department of Civil Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur, is B.E. Civil Engineering, M.Tech. Environmental Engineering and Ph.D. Environmental Science and Engineering. He has been teaching subjects related to wastewater treatment and energy recovery. Presently he is guiding Research Scholars on the topics wastewater treatment and reuse, anaerobic wastewater treatment, bioelectricity recovery, catalyst development and membrane separator development for application in microbial fuel cell, and enhancing electrogenesis in MFC, He had been visiting Scientist to Ben Gurion University, Israel and University of Newcastle upon Tyne, UK under Marie Curie fellowship by European Union and had stint as faculty of various capacities in renowned engineering colleges and research institutes. He has been working in the field of anaerobic wastewater treatment, bioenergy recovery during wastewater treatment using bioelectrochemical systems and mainly microbial fuel cell. Throught the reseach projects a demonstration plants consisting of upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactor to treat sewage and anaerobic digester to treat septic tank sludge has been constructed on campus for methane recovery from waste. A pilot MFC based septic tank is in operation to recover direct electricity from sewage sludge.
