The School of Information Technology has been recently started with the objective of promoting research and development, industrial consultancy, and teaching in frontier areas of Information Technology. The School currently offers M.Tech. (Information Technology), M.S. and Ph.D. programmes .

The M.Tech. programme is open only to students who qualify in GATE paper in IT or CS departments.The M.S. programme is open only to qualified staff of research projects and full time employees of IIT Kharagpur, and to sponsored candidates from a few government organizations. The Ph.D. programme is open to graduate/post-graduate degree holders in any discipline subject to the general regulations for Ph.D. admission to IIT Kharagpur.
