Academy-Industry Collaboration

  1. At the 12th DefExpo-22, a new DRDO Industry Academia-Centre of Excellence (DIA-CoE) was sanctioned for IIT Kharagpur for carrying out Long Term Directed Research activities at IIT Kharagpur. The four thrust areas of consideration by the CoE are, Directed Energy System’s Technologies; Unmanned Underwater Robotic Technologies; Cognitive Technologies and Cyber Physical Defence Systems; and Quality Reliability and Safety Studies.

Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Kharagpur along with Tata Medical Center, Kolkata have launched fully annotated, relational, de-identified cancer image bank – CHAVIT, to address and initiate better health and medical services through technological amalgamation of bio-engineering studies. The CHAVI-Comprehensive Archive of Imaging is a towering boost to cancer research in India and will enable scientists from across the world to have free access to de-identified patient images and requisite clinical information that can be utilised for research purposes. The project has been designed as a research collaboration between Tata Medical Center, Kolkata, and IIT Kharagpur, and developed as a part of the National Digital Library of India (NDLI). Its purpose is to develop an image biobank that is available across the country and to foster a foundation for future collaborative research efforts amongst major Indian cancer institutes. The project will encourage researchers, academicians, and industry experts to use the wealth of imaging data available in CHAVI.

Researchers from IIT Kharagpur in collaboration with the Indo-Korea Science and Technology Center (IKST) have now developed a method called CrysXPP to predict the properties of crystalline materials through machine learning. Until now, crystalline materials have been difficult to test on a large scale. Determining the electronic, magnetic and elastic properties of a crystal is often time-consuming, expensive and calculation-intensive as it requires extensive experimentation. Machine learning algorithms are data-intensive. It involves a large amount of data from the source materials which are labeled with property labels to accurately predict properties of new crystals.  With these shortcomings in mind, IIT KGP researchers developed CrysXPP, a machine learning system that enables rapid prediction of various material properties with high precision. The published work addresses the important problem of sparse and opaque data, which are the main obstacles in predicting the properties of crystals rapidly and accurately.

IIT Kharagpur signed an MoU with the Institute of Drilling Technology (IDT) of Oil & Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) Limited to undertake several collaborative R&D projects in the domain of drilling, drilling fluids, cementing fluids and completion fluids. The MoU was signed between Shri. G.A.V.S. Prasad, HOI, IDT, ONGC and Prof. Suman Chakraborty, Dean R&D, IIT Kharagpur. One of the R&D projects for the development of thermally stable drilling fluids has already been initiated by Prof. Sandeep D. Kulkarni, Deysarkar Centre of Excellence in Petroleum Engineering as Principal Investigator and Prof. Kiran Gore, Department of Chemistry which has been positively received by IDT, ONGC.

Rural Technology Action Group (RuTAG) of IIT Kharagpur collaborated with Odisha Rural Development and Marketing Society (ORMAS) to facilitate rural technological innovation for the growth of Producers’ groups and Producers’ companies providing technological solutions to improve the efficiency of production along with value addition. Both the institution will entail identifying technological needs of the product-based livelihood and engage in relevant R&D to upgrade the existing technology by modifying, redesigning and standardizing the users at grassroots level.
With Research for Resurgence Foundation (RFRF), the institute joins hands on strategic collaboration and mutual cooperation in research, sharing of knowledge & resources. It is a strong academic collaboration by mutually undertaking joint responsibilities and activities in their respective field of excellence, research, resources, knowledge and personnel along with effective and efficient engagement towards strengthening and streamlining research in scientific and technology development, innovation and entrepreneurship ecosystem.

A two day Training Program on Cryogenic Technology for Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL) Officers was conducted by the Cryogenic Engineering department of IIT Kharagpur.

A 16-week Certificate Course on Logistics and Process Safety Engineering (LPSE) was organized for the Officials of Adani Group by the Centre of Excellence on Safety Engineering & Analytics (CoE-SEA) jointly with a guest lecturer from Purdue University which offered a micro-credit course on Risk and Uncertainty Analysis. A 76 weeks Weekend Talk was completed on Safety Engineering, Management and Analytics (SEMA).

The Central Research Facility of IIT Kharagpur conducted a Hands-on training on Real-Time PCR and DNA Sequencing in association with Thermo Fisher India Pvt. Ltd.

The School of Medical Science & Technology (SMST) conducted ‘UpSkill : EnMed’ Workshop together with IEEE YP Affinity Group and Dr. B. C. Roy Multi-speciality Medical Research Centre
