IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENTS
Admission portal for Joint MSc-PhD in Chemical and Molecular Biology for the academic year 2025-2026 is open from 12th May 2025 to 06th June 2025.
The Department of Bioscience and Biotechnology was formed in 2023 after the merger of the Department of Biotechnology and School of Bio Science. The merger facilitates cutting-edge research and education in the fields of biological and biomedical sciences. This department builds on the strong tradition of interdisciplinary research in IIT Kharagpur. Our multi-disciplinary approach ensures diverse areas of research that include studies at the level of molecules (biochemistry, biophysics, molecular & structural biology) to organisms (cellular and developmental biology, microbiology and immunology). The overarching goal of this department is to elucidate the structure and function of biological molecules that influence the physiology of an organism, and more importantly apply these basic findings to the discovery of novel therapeutic solutions for various human diseases to enhance human health.
We are using state-of-the-art facilities to study biological macromolecules in both normal and diseased states. Biophysical methods such as X-ray crystallography, NMR spectroscopy, surface plasmon resonance (SPR) spectroscopy, analytical ultra-centrifugation (AUC) and isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC) are being used to study the molecular and structural basis of macromolecular functions. A few areas of interest are - regulation of transcription factors, DNA repair mechanisms, protein folding and mis-folding, intrinsically disordered proteins, enzyme catalysis and protein engineering. Molecular biology studies are supported by strong research and training programs in cell biology, developmental biology and genetics. The common themes include regulation of gene expression, signal transduction, intracellular trafficking, cell cycle and apoptosis, cell polarity and migration, cell-cell interactions, pattern formation and organ development.
A major focus of our research is the discovery of therapeutic strategies for various human diseases based on our fundamental molecular and cellular biology research. At the Department of Bioscience and Biotechnology we aim to study many important diseases including, but not limited to, cancer, autoimmune diseases, neurodegenerative diseases, heart and respiratory diseases, diabetes and tuberculosis.
Joint M.Sc.-Ph.D. Program in "Chemical and Molecular Biology"
Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur (IIT-KGP) in collaboration with Indian Association for the Cultivation of Science (IACS) announces an integrated M.Sc.-Ph.D. Program in "Chemical and Molecular Biology". The program aims to bring two premier institutes in teaching and research together to offer courses in the interface of Biology and Chemistry. Students will participate in course works in both the institutes. The students obtaining CGPA greater than the stipulated one will be directly admitted to the Ph.D. program after completion of M.Sc. Applications are invited from the interested Indian nationals for admission to the above program. Details of course structure and contents are available here.
