Susanta Banerjee earned his M.Sc., M.Tech., and Ph.D. degrees from the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur, India, in 1988, 1989, and 1993, respectively. He began his research career with the Defence Research & Development Organization (DRDO) of the Government of India, where he worked as a Scientist from 1992 to 2004. From 1997 to 1999, Dr. Banerjee was an Alexander von Humboldt Research Fellow at the Technical University of Munich. In 2004, he joined the GE India Technology Centre (JFWTC) in Bangalore as Lead Scientist and worked there until the end of 2005. Dr. Banerjee returned to IIT Kharagpur in 2006 and became a full professor in the Materials Science Centre in 2011. His research interests include the design of polymers for membrane-based applications and carbon dot-based nanomaterials for electroluminescent applications. He has published 262 original research papers, which have garnered over 8,650 citations, resulting in an h-index of 52. Additionally, he has made more than 158 presentations at scientific conferences, both in India and internationally. Dr. Banerjee holds eight granted patents as an inventor and has received numerous awards and medals, including the Defence Technology Spin-off Award, the GE Management Award, the Materials Research Society of India (MRSI) Medal, the Prof. M. Santappa Memorial Award, and recognition as a Fellow of the West Bengal Academy of Science and Technology. He has also been awarded the Institute Chair Professor title by IIT Kharagpur. For the fifth consecutive year (2020, 2021, 2022, 2023, and 2024), he has been listed among the top 2 percent of most cited polymer scientists by Stanford University. Dr. Banerjee is well-known for mentoring postgraduate students, having supervised 27 Ph.D. candidates and 45 master's students. He is actively involved in several extramural-funded research and consultancy projects and collaborates with numerous research groups in Germany, the USA, and Russia.
