  • Rock Mechanics
(a) My research critically evaluates physical and mechanical behaviors of virtually isotropic and anisotropic rock and rock-like materials at laboratory scale. Improvement of laboratory test methods often remains as a part of such investigation. How degree of weathering influences strength and deformational behaviors of rock materials is another aspect that I am interested in. (b) A comprehensive study on rock failure modes at laboratory scale is potentially important as it helps recognize the adequacy of the support designed on the basis of the nature of an engineering work. My research aims to understand rock failure patterns under different states of stress. (c) Shear behavior of natural rock joints under constant normal load conditions (that has got tremendous implications in rock mass behaviors at shallow depth (e.g. shallow-depth landslide along a rock discontinuity)) is also an important component of my ongoing research. How surface roughness and state of weathering of joint surface influence shear behavior is critically scrutinized at the laboratory.
