My specialisation is in stratigraphy, sedimentology, ichnology and basin analysis. I am interested in applying field-based techniques in physical sedimentology to understand large-scale variation in the stratigraphic architecture and palaeogeography of a sedimentary basin. A sedimentary basin develops through interaction among tectonics, climate, sea-level changes and surface processes. Reconstructing these interacting factors from the rock record is challenging and requires a multiproxy approach. My work on the eastern Himalayan Foreland Basin reveals a markedly different scenario of interacting marine and fluvial processes, controlled by global sea-level changes and the tectonics of the orogen. Now I am working on the Neogene succession of the Indo-Myanmar Range. My recent work extends to the Gondwana basins of India (Rewa, Satpura, Damodar and Pranhita-Godavari), where I am exploring animal-sediment interactions in a semi-arid climate within a continental interior rift basin. Currently, I am involved, among other things, in exploring Precambrian Earth-surface processes through the study of Proterozoic sediments of the Sullavai Group in the Pranhita-Godavari Valley, and in examining recent sediment transport by the Brahmaputra River to the Bay of Bengal.
