IIT Kharagpur and Institute Social Responsibility

IIT Kharagpur actively gives back to society and is consistently working towards contributing to various aspects of societal development. In this regard, IIT Kharagpur works with various corporate bodies to undertake initiatives to address various issues under the Institute Social Responsibility (ISR) banner.

Majority of ISR projects are aligned with:

• Hunger, Poverty, Malnutrition and Health
• Education
• Rural Development Projects
• Gender Equality and Women Empowerment
• Environmental Sustainability
• National Heritage, Art and Culture

Some of the Mega Projects, undertaken under this banner include:

• Scientific Approach to Networking and Designing of Heritage Interfaces (SANDHI)
• Signals and Systems for Life Science
• Sustainable Food Security through Technological Interventions for Production, Processing and Logistics
• Future of Cities: Enhancing Urban Life in India

IIT Kharagpur additionally has several centres that are dedicated to socially relevant initiatives like:

• Department of Education.
• Continuing Education Program.
• Rural Development Centre.
• Design and Innovation Centre for Rural Technology.
• School of Medical Science and Technology
• Unnat Bharat Cell (as a part of Govt. of India’s Unnat Bharat Abhiyan), which further includes,
  • National Service Scheme (NSS) unit,
  • Rural Technology Action Group (RuTAG),
  • Rural Development Centre (RDC),
  • School of Medical Science and Technology (SMST),
  • Advanced Technology Development Centre (ATDC), and
  • Department of Agriculture and Food Engineering (AgFE) members.

These centres actively work towards rural development through knowledge and technology transfer, fostering integrated healthcare delivery system, vocational training and capacity building for self-employment and entrepreneurial growth and women and child welfare schemes (https://www.iitkgp.ac.in/assets/pdf/csr_ge.pdf).

Technology Environment Society (TES) is a student-led organization at IIT Kharagpur. TES is dedicated to the conservation and preservation of the environment, and to promoting sustainability in society. Its members are committed to raising awareness about ecology, nature, and the environment, and to sensitizing others to the importance of protecting our planet. Through a range of initiatives and activities, TES strives towards a more sustainable future by finding solutions to environmental challenges and promoting conservation efforts within the campus and the wider community.
