Research Areas

The research focus during my doctoral degree was on Pedagogical Content Knowledge (PCK) with a view to addressing ethical issues in Biological Sciences in a classroom context at secondary school level and undergraduate level. I have conducted in-depth research on pedagogical issues that arise in the classroom while evaluating and analyzing complex issues related to subject and curricula. Therefore, my interest in designing innovative teaching and learning practices and contextual pedagogies has evolved over the years especially after interacting with a diverse group of students and faculty across different colleges and universities.
My research interest is focused on advancing the ethos and values of Education for Sustainable Development (ESD), and end-to-end integration of ESD into education curricula and systems. It also includes assessment of the various approaches adopted by different countries to address the objectives of ESD while examining the challenges in implementing ESD within their cultural and geographical boundaries. Once the challenges are identified, it will be easier to overcome them by organizing and targeting efforts in the right direction with the involvement of all stakeholders. A critical examination of the curricula in the light of the objectives of ESD will also help in realigning them with the goals of ESD. Also, since pedagogy plays a mission critical role in translating the curricula in the classroom, much depends on the classroom pedagogy that teachers adopt in their classrooms and whether it aligns and integrates with the goals of ESD. This constitutes the formal sector where ESD is being implemented.
I am also keen to develop and design some innovative teaching learning modules and materials for delving into the ethical dimensions of various socio-scientific and environmental issues that are otherwise sidelined within the prescribed curriculum.
