About The Department

A first of its kind in the IIT system, the Department of Education has been established at IIT Kharagpur to offer the Integrated Teacher Education programme (ITEP). The ITEP is a 4-year integrated programme under which the students will receive a dual major undergraduate degree in a specific discipline along with B.Ed. Keeping in view the mandate of the National Education Policy 2020 and subsequent initiatives by the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE), the Department of Education at this institute offers B.Sc-B.Ed (Secondary) with Majors in four different disciplines, namely Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and Economics. Apart from preparing teachers for the reconfigured school education system in the country, the ITEP helps impart disciplinary knowledge in the abovementioned subjects so that the students gain in-depth knowledge. The programme would also ensure their admission to higher studies in the disciplinary streams, including higher professional education.In addition to its flagship UG program, the Department also offers Ph.D. in different subjects. Currently, the Department offers a Ph.D. programme in Physics, Chemistry, and Teacher Education with a special focus on Science Education. In its efforts to extend its support to the mandate of quality teaching, research, and outreach; the faculty members are actively involved in carrying out frontier areas of research in their respective domains, covering broad fields such as Physics, Chemistry, and Education. They are undertaking regular training programmes and with their overwhelming participation, the Department runs sponsored projects and undertakes collaborations. Read less

The newly established Department of Education is currently running the following two programmes:

# B.Sc-B.Ed 4-year integrated Programme with Major in Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, and Economics
# Ph.D. Programme in Physics, Chemistry, and Teacher Education (Science)

The Department is blessed with a team of dedicated and talented core faculty in Physics, Chemistry, and Teacher Education (Science). Besides, it receives overwhelming teaching, research, and administrative support from the institute's sister Departments/Centres/Schools, including Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Humanities and Social Sciences, CoE for Indian Knowledge System, and the Academy of Classical and Folk Art. The faculty of these academic units continue to participate in teaching several courses under the currently run UG programme.
The Department is equipped with state-of-the-art Physics, Chemistry, and Software laboratories. Besides, the laboratories of other sister academic units, classrooms, and central research facilities provided under the common pool are also open to our students and faculty members.
The Department of Education, while staying committed to creating good quality student-teachers for the country, is marching forward to fostering the needs of the current and future education through innovative teaching, research, and outreach programmes.
