The Geospatial Academy, IIT Kharagpur is an interdisciplinary academic unit established on 08th January 2026 is dedicated to advancing geospatial science, remote sensing, and geoinformatics for applications of national importance, aligned with the National Geospatial Policy 2022 and the National Geospatial Mission. The Academy focuses on scalable geospatial workflows for multi-sensor Earth observation, AI/ML-driven analytics, and responsible dissemination of large geospatial datasets to support climate resilience, infrastructure planning, and sustainable development. With a strong emphasis on capacity building and national outreach, it enables teaching, training, research, collaboration, and innovation through partnerships with academia, government agencies, and industry.The Academy caters to the next generation studies & research and service providing; AI/ML integration facility, high-resolution data processing facility, multi-sensor analysis and multi-sensor fusion (optical, SAR, thermal) techniques and algorithm development, Voxel based feature extraction technique and software development environment creation, super resolution research for helping industry in generating value added products, development of standards with industry, Software tools and patch development for solving Industry specific needs, Cloud computing and edge computing for space based systems and IoT devices,helping create thematic application services for industry,Research and development environment creation for agentic AI, GeoAI, foundation models, embeddings, digital twin applications (for Building Emission and Vegetation Carbon), Industry centric critical algorithm and data analysis software environment creation like interferometry, polrimetry, SAM for hyperspectral data, quality assurance and calibration and validation facility for data quality certification; are the important priority areas.
