The Vikram Sodhi Centre of Excellence for AI-Enabled Geological and Mining Systems was established on 17 April 2026 at IIT Kharagpur through the generous endowment of Shri Vikram Sodhi, Vice Chairman of Mineros SA (MSA.TO) and Managing Partner and Co-founder of Sun Valley Investments as an independent, interdisciplinary research centre dedicated to advancing the application of Artificial Intelligence in the geological and mining sectors. The Centre of Excellence (CoE)'s mission is to develop AI-native systems that significantly enhance productivity, safety, and sustainability in mining, with a special emphasis on Indian geological conditions and operational requirements. It`s core research and deployment activities focus on Orebody Intelligence, Grade Control and Mine Planning, Mineral Processing Optimisation, Predictive Maintenance, and Safety, Stability, and Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) aspects of mining operations.The CoE serves as a hub for interdisciplinary research, innovation, and industrial consultancy by fostering strong collaborations with industry, government agencies, and leading national and international research institutions. In alignment with national mission priorities, the CoE works on critical minerals and strategic resource security, data management and security, mine waste management , critical mineral systems and supply chain intelligence, large-scale interdisciplinary and inter-institutional collaborations, high-impact publications and patents, and a systems-based approach to solving real-world mining challenges. Research will encompass both terrestrial and deep-sea mining with particular attention to critical minerals such as lithium, antimony, copper, REE and other strategically important resources.In academic domain, the CoE's aims to develop a vibrant ecosystem for education and capacity building. It supports undergraduate and postgraduate internships, and intends to offer elective courses, certificate and executive education programmes, and promote  master, doctoral and post-doctoral studies and research in emerging areas of AI-enabled mining systems. The CoE provides an interface for academia, Industry, practioners and policy makers to solve real-world problems for the benefit of the Mother Earth.  Read less

The Vikram Sodhi Centre of Excellence for AI-Enabled Geological and Mining Systems at IIT Kharagpur reflects a bold vision to advance India's mining sector through cutting-edge research, innovation, and strong partnerships with industry, government, and leading national and international research institutions. Established as a Centre of Excellence (CoE) from its inception, it is committed to delivering impactful research, industrial relevance, and academic excellence.

The CoE focuses on developing AI-enabled solutions for mineral exploration by integrating multi-source geoscientific data, embedding geological mineralisation models, leveraging analogue deposit data, and creating repeatable workflows for generating drill-ready exploration targets. Its research spans terrestrial and deep-sea mining, with special emphasis on critical minerals such as lithium, copper, antimony, rare earth elements (REEs), and other strategic resources.

Building on IIT Kharagpur's long-standing strengths in Geology, Geophysics, Mining Engineering, Metallurgy, Computer Science combined with its capabilities in Artificial Intelligence and Data Science, the CoE provides a unique interdisciplinary platform for research, consultancy, innovation, and capacity building. It also aims to promote internships, advanced research, executive education, certificate programmes, and future academic programmes in AI-enabled Mining Systems and study of Critical Minerals. 

The CoE warmly welcomes students, researchers, faculty members, industry leaders, policymakers, government agencies, and inter-/national collaborators to join this transformative initiative. Through collective expertise and shared commitment, we aspire to build a vibrant ecosystem that drives scientific excellence, technological innovation, sustainable resource development and strategic capability for the future of mining geology using AI technology. This will lead to resource optimization, both in terms of manpower and financial resources.
