Ensuring Reliability.” The Subir Chowdhury School of Quality and Reliability (SCSQR) at IIT Kharagpur is India’s first and only academic institution devoted entirely to the study, advancement, and application of Quality and Reliability Engineering. Evolving from the distinguished Reliability Engineering Centre established in 1983, the School represents more than four decades of thought leadership, technological advancement, and deep engagement with critical national organizations. Today, Subir Chowdhury School of Quality and Reliability (SCSQR) stands as a unique destination where engineers learn not just to create systems that work — but systems that continue to work, safely, efficiently, and predictably, throughout their lifetime. A defining marker of SCSQR is its extensive engagement with India’s strategic and high-technology sectors. Collaborations span organisations such as the Indian Navy, Indian Air Force, Indian Army, DRDO, ISRO, BARC, NPCIL, and many more. Students routinely engage in projects involving reliability testing of defence equipment, quality assurance of aerospace subsystems, life prediction of nuclear and power plant components, maintenance modelling of naval systems, telecom reliability studies, and high-stress product evaluations for industries. In today’s global environment, success depends not merely on innovation but on the assurance that every product, process, and system will perform with unwavering dependability. Quality ensures that systems are built correctly; reliability ensures that they continue to function properly. Whether in aerospace, defence, energy, automotive, healthcare, electronics, infrastructure, or manufacturing, the world now depends on engineers who can meld these two pillars — Quality and Reliability (Q&R) — into every stage of the engineering life cycle. At SCSQR, students are immersed in an academic and research ecosystem where these principles are lived, practised, and applied from conceptual design to manufacturing, testing, operation, maintenance, and end-of-life evaluation.
