Since the 1970s, IIT Kharagpur has been involved with a good number of ISRO sponsored projects through RESPOND programs and through MOU’s with individual ISRO Laboratories. Space Technology Cell (STC) was set up in July 1998 to boost the collaborative research programs between ISRO and IIT Kharagpur. In 2004, the Cell was renamed the Kalpana Chawla Space Technology Cell (KCSTC) after the celebrated NASA astronaut Dr. Kalpana Chawla who was the first woman of Indian origin to fly into space. The new building of KCSTC was inaugurated on November 17, 2004, by Shri. G. Madhavan Nair, Chairman, ISRO, and Secretary, Department of Space, Government of India. Since its inception, ISRO has recognized and extensively used various research efforts in space-related technologies developed at IIT Kharagpur. Both organizations have recognized the imperative need to generate basic knowledge through advanced academic research to enable a truly self-reliant and self-generating space program for our country. The KCSTC offers a unique platform for interdisciplinary, collaboration driven infusion of advanced technologies in the space science area, which is in harmony with the 'Make-in-India' initiative of the Government of India. Other than research, the KCSTC also focuses on education and capacity building. The Space Technology Student Society (spAts) is a student initiative that functions as the student body of the KCSTC. It organizes the annual Space Technology and Astronomy themed fest, National Students' Space Challenge (NSSC) every year since 2011, and thus ignites a passion for space science among the students by organizing talks, discussions, stargazing sessions, lectures, and presentations, which is in line with the National Education Policy (NEP) initiative of the Government of India. If you have further queries after browsing this website, please do not hesitate to contact us. Welcome to the Kalpana Chawla Space Technology Cell (KCSTC) at IIT Kharagpur. The proven strong research base at IIT Kharagpur in the areas of direct relevance to the future programs of ISRO has paved the way for cooperation between the two organizations for more than twenty years now. Some major thrust areas in the related fields of space technology, space science, and space applications have been identified. Faculties and researchers from different departments of IIT Kharagpur are involved with scientists from different ISRO Laboratories to do cutting edge interdisciplinary research.

A Joint Policy Committee (JPC) has been constituted jointly by the Director, IIT Kharagpur, and the Chairman, ISRO, with appropriate representation from both organizations to plan, program, and periodically review the research program and related activities of the KCSTC.

Several projects have been completed successfully, and many more are underway. We have achieved significant research output through the development of reports, algorithms, publications, patents, and prototypes. With the objectives of ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ (Self-reliant Nation), the KCSTC would emulate excellent scientific and academic ambience in the area of space science and technology research for the edification of society and mankind. We invite more and more faculty members and researchers from the IIT Kharagpur fraternity and scientists from ISRO to get involved in fulfilling our objective.
