The Department came into existence with the very inception of IIT Kharagpur in 1951. With the passage of time, the Department has become very vibrant with its active participation in teaching, training, research and consultancies. Currently, the Department houses many disciplines, including Economics, English Language & Literature, Linguistics, Psychology, HR, History, Sanskrit and Sociology. It runs major programs such as BS (4 Year)  and BS-MS (5 Year) in Economics, Master of Human Resource Management (MHRM) and Ph.D. in several disciplines. The Department is involved in several research projects and consultancies, having contemporary relevance. Department of Humanities and Social Sciences invite application for the PhD programme in the following subjects:
 
(1) Economics
(2) English 
(3) History
(4) Linguistics
(5) Management (Finance, HR, Operations)
(6) Psychology
(7) Sanskrit
(8) Sociology
 
In addition to the Institute's shortlisting criteria, the Departmental shortlisting criteria are as follows:

 (1) For General Category/EWS: Minimum 65% marks or a CGPA of 7 on a 10-point scale in the qualifying examination (M.A./ M.Sc.) in Humanities/Social Sciences (including Economics)/ Engineering (M.Tech/MS/ME/M.Sc)/Science (M. Sc.)/ Management (MBA) and/or equivalent.

 (2) For OBC/SC/ST/PwD: Minimum 60% marks or a CGPA of 6.5 on a 10-point scale in the qualifying examination (M.A./ M. Sc.) in Humanities/Social Sciences (including Economics)/ Engineering (M.Tech/MS/ME/M. Sc.)/Science (M. Sc.)/ Management (MBA) and/or equivalent.

 (3) For All Categories: At least 60% marks or 6.5 CGPA on a 10-point scale in class 10th, 12th, and in BA/B.Sc./ B. Com/equivalent degree (for all candidates).

(4) The candidate should have Masters Degree in any of the above-mentioned subjects. Read less
