The current areas include Bond graph and Computer Aided Design techniques, Computer Aided Manufacturing, Flexible Manufacturing Systems and Robotics, Intelligent Machines and Systems, Solid Modelling and Computer Graphics, Application of Neural Networks, Systems Dynamic Simulation, Precision Engineering Heating Ventilation and Air Conditioning systems, Combustion Modelling and Jet Impingement Heat Transfer. The sponsored projects include developing Monodispersable Aerosols, Building Automation, Machining of Advanced Materials, Environmental Friendly Grinding of Titanium Alloys using Cryogenic Cooling, Development of Industrial Robots, Laser Material Processing Technology, Noise and Vibration Control, Condition Monitoring. Welcome to the Department of Mechanical Engineering at IIT Kharagpur. Being the oldest in IIT System, we have been at the forefront of Mechanical engineering education, research, and industry collaboration, shaping world-class engineers and driving innovation to serve the Nation and beyond. Our mission is to drive innovation and sustainability in Mechanical engineering through transformative education and research.
We warmly invite prospective students, aspiring and established faculty, collaborators, sponsors, and well-wishers from across the globe to engage with us. Our department is ranked 95th globally and 4th nationally in the QS Subject Rankings for 2025. Notably, we secured the top position in India for research-related metrics, a testament to our commitment to cutting-edge research.
Our academic and research endeavors are organized into three key divisions: Manufacturing Science, Thermal and Fluid Sciences, and Applied Mechanics and Design. With approximately 50 nationally and internationally recognized faculty members; we address pressing global and local challenges through pioneering research. The faculty members have won prestigious awards, namely Shanti Swaroop Bhatnagar, Infosys award, various fellowships of national and international academies, various chair professors. The department is equipped with state-of-the-art lab facilities, which are used for the training of the students, undertaking research and solving problems of the industry.
We offer academic programs, namely B.Tech, Dual Degree (B.Tech+M.Tech), M.Tech, Joint M.Tech-PhD, and PhD.
