Bioscience and Biotechnology

The Department of Biotechnology was formally established in 1999. The academic and research program of the Department was initially started in the Department of Chemical Engineering in 1986 through a M.Tech course in Biotechnology & Engineering supported under the Manpower Training (MPT) Program of the Department of Biotechnology (DBT), Government of India. The Institute started the first ever 4-year B.Tech course in Biotechnology & Biochemical Engineering in IITs in 1994. From the year 2000, this program was further changed to 4-year B.Tech and 5-year Dual degree M.Tech.The School of Bioscience was established in 2014 to promote interdisciplinary education and research in various emerging areas of basic biological sciences. The School introduced a teaching program in “Science of Living System” to all undergraduate students of the institute with an idea not only to inspire and excite the young mind about the fascinating facets of living organisms, but also to solve the mystery of complex biological problem using knowledge and expertise of mathematical, physical, chemical and engineering sciences.The Department of Biotechnology and School of Bioscience have merged in 2023 and reorganized its teaching and research landscapes keeping in mind with the rapidly evolving areas on Biology/Bioengineering to achieve excellence. Course and curriculum of the B.Tech and MTech programs (Biotechnology and Biochemical Engineering) are revised and made it truly interdisciplinary. At present, Department offers B.Tech, Dual degree (B.Tech + M.Tech), M.Tech programs in Biotechnology and Biochemical Engineering and joint MSc-PhD program on Chemical and Molecular Biology (in collaboration with Indian Association for the Cultivation of Science, Kolkata). In addition, Department offers PhD program in different areas of Bioscience and Biotechnology.
