Environmental Science and Engineering

The School of Environmental Science and Engineering (SESE) is an interdisciplinary academic unit that was established in 2012. The mission of SESE is to provide a comprehensive understanding of our environment and design economical and effective engineering solutions to environmental problems. SESE focuses on ecological renewal and pollution control be it in water, soil, or air. Major areas of research are water and wastewater management, solid and hazardous waste management, including radioactive, biological waste management, air pollution monitoring and control and environmental nanotechnology.  At the macro-level, the School is working on improving the efficiency of water supply systems, water use and reuse and wastewater management, recycling, reuse and pricing policy, and river basin management. SESE students are working on issues related to new waste streams such as plastic and e-waste, waste-to-energy options, biochar generation and use, groundwater contamination, and use of novel adsorbents and catalysts for degradation of pollutants. At present, SESE runs a Ph.D. programme only and the first batch of Research Scholars enrolled in 2014. At the time of writing this, forty Research Scholars have received their Ph.D. degrees from SESE, IIT Kharagpur. The Research Scholars have authored close to 300 journal articles, book chapters and books.   Read less
