Research on iron & Steel Processing: Alternative routes of iron making using RHF: One of the major research interests of the author is towards selecting operating parameters based on rigorous experiments in laboratory scale RHF and process models and subsequently scale it up to pilot scale. Presently he is engaged in producing iron nugget from EAFD-coal/biochar composite pellets, solid state production of low carbon ferro-manganese in RHF.  The author has erected a pilot scale RHF at ASP, Durgapur in collaboration with ASP, minmet consultsnts by utilizing MHRD-MoS-ASP sponsored UAY project (worth 741 lakhs).  Production of 80% metallized sponge iron has been demonstrated.
Another prime area of research of the author is on reduction and control of NMI in steel.  Based on mathematical model and plant scale experiments, his research group has identified the optimum operating parameters of the calcium wire injection in steel for maximum recovery and efficacy.  His research group also identified the forging schedule for defect free forging in presence of modified inclusion.  One of the major project in this direction was  a satellite project of IIT Kgp-HEC-DHI as a part of CoE on advanced manufacturing at IIT Kharagpur.  The author  also collaborated with Vizag steel, and WMG, UK towards inclusion control in steel.
The author is also involved seriously in Welding Research.  The author has been instrumental as one of the PIs in developing an indigenous Electron Beam Welding (EBW) setup at IIT Kharagpur in collaboration with BARC & BRNS. They have demonstrated successful dissimilar welding of difficult to join materials using electron beam welding.  The author has worked intensely with the research group at Pennsylvania State University, to develop an indigenous CFD code for fusion welding for steels.  The author is also working with WMG, UK towards understanding evolution of welding defects during EBW.
